The Creation of Lake Martin

The Engineering Feat That Shaped Alabama

In the early 1900s, Alabama needed more electric power to support its growing cities and industries.

The Tallapoosa River became the site for a bold new project called Martin Dam. This would become a hydroelectric dam that created one of the largest reservoirs of its time.

Construction began in 1923, led by Alabama Power. Engineers designed the dam to harness the river’s energy and generate hydroelectric power for the state. In 1926, Martin Dam was completed, and the water levels began to rise. Over time, the river valley transformed into what is now Lake Martin.

The dam created a 44,000-acre man-made lake, flooding over 30,000 acres of land.

Small towns, farms, and forests disappeared beneath the water. While this was a major change, it paved the way for economic growth, energy production, and new opportunities in the region.

At the time, Lake Martin was the largest man-made lake in the world. It was an engineering marvel, providing renewable energy and shaping the future of central Alabama.

Today, the dam still operates, supplying 300 million kWHs of hydroelectric power every year. At any given time the dam provides electricity to over 28,000 homes.

When Martin Dam was completed in 1926, it created a massive 44,000-acre reservoir with over 750 miles of shoreline.

At the time, no other man made lake in the world was larger. While larger lakes have since been built, this engineering achievement made headlines and cemented Lake Martin’s place in history.

It provided hydroelectric power, water supply, and new opportunities for recreation and development in Alabama. The lake’s sheer size made it a boating and fishing paradise, attracting visitors from across the region.

While larger lakes have since been built, Lake Martin remains one of the largest and most treasured lakes in the United States.

Today, Lake Mead in Nevada and Arizona holds the title for the largest man made lake in the country by volume, while Lake Oahe in the Dakotas is the largest by surface area.

Even though Lake Martin no longer holds the world record, it continues to be one of the most beloved lakes in Alabama. Its rich history, natural beauty, and strong community make it just as special today as it was 100 years ago.

How Lake Martin Helped Alabama Grow

Lake Martin has been a vital part of Alabama’s economy and community for the past 100 years.

What started as a hydroelectric project soon became much more. The lake brought power, jobs, and new opportunities to the region.

As the water levels rose, so did development around the lake. Towns like Alexander City, Dadeville and Eclectic grew as businesses and families settled near the shoreline. Over time, Lake Martin became a hub for recreation and tourism, drawing visitors from all over the Southeast.

The lake’s boating, fishing, and vacation homes created a strong lakefront economy. Marinas, restaurants, and resorts flourished, making Lake Martin a top destination for both residents and tourists. Today, it continues to drive real estate growth, local businesses, and outdoor recreation.

Beyond the economy, the lake has also built a strong sense of community. Generations of families have made memories on its waters, and events bring people together year after year.

The history of Lake Martin has shaped the lifestyle, culture, and growth of Alabama, leaving a lasting impact that continues today.

Birds of Alabama and the Changing Shoreline of Lake Martin

Since its creation, Lake Martin has become home to a variety of wildlife and birds. One of the most recognizable is the kingfisher, often seen perched along the shoreline or diving into the water to catch fish.

When Lake Martin Dock Company was founded in 1990 as the lake’s first dedicated dock builder, it chose the kingfisher as its symbol. The bird’s strength, precision, and deep connection to the water reflected the company’s mission of building durable, well-crafted docks that would stand the test of time.

As Lake Martin’s popularity grew, so did its shoreline. What was once a rugged, untouched landscape became home to thousands of docks, boathouses, and lakefront properties. Over the years, Lake Martin Dock Company played a key role in this transformation, helping homeowners create functional and beautiful waterfront spaces. Despite this growth, Lake Martin remains a thriving habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Environmental efforts, such as lake conservation programs, shoreline restoration, and responsible development practices, have helped protect the lake’s natural ecosystem.

Thanks to these efforts, kingfishers, herons, ospreys, and many other birds of Alabama continue to call Lake Martin home.
